Randy Rogers Band wouldn't surprise me. They're around this area all the time anyway, so I don't see why not. They played a free concert at the park on our campus a few nights ago.

Wilco I pretty much expected, since they enjoy being there so much. The fact that they're one of my very favorite artists doesn't hurt.

Green Day I'm indifferent to, but it would be a pretty big pull for the ACL organizers.

I don't get where on earth Green Day came from, they aren't touring at that time or anything, and they aren't on pollstar, if they were I'd probably enjoy seeing them but I'd be really surprised to see them.

the fella on galleywinter says HE SAW IT ON POLLSTAR YESTERDAY BUT THEN IT WAS TAKEN DOWN

I know that guy is trustworthy so I can say he definitely SAW IT
now
does that mean that Green Day is DEFINITELY PERFORMING AT ACL?
*NO*
but it's a helluva clue

Flaming Lips, Wilco and Arcade Fire were all "confirmed" at Bonnaroo before the real lineup was announced.

Smashing Pumpkins was "confirmed" before Lollapalooza and Coachella announced their lineups.

Last year the mad rumour was that Stevie Wonder would headline.

Rumours for the most part are just that.

I agree that more people need to relax and be less negative. But, that won't happen, lightly moderated web forums tend to allow for anonymous people to make hostile and critical posts. Too bad, that the complainers don't understand that most readers don't really care that they dislike DMB or Prince. At least on my end, I am just trying to figure out who is playing. The speculation entertains me. You won't hear me bash any acts. Everybody who plays ACL has merit and has a lot more musical talent and skill than me (or most of us for that matter).

As for everything being mere rumors, some rumor are more likely than others. Some confirmations are very reliable.

In paricular, the confirmed bands found at this site (http://aclfest2006rumors.blogspot.com/)
come from several sources, all reliable enough to call them a confirmation.

- Band official web pages
- Band's official MySpace pages
- Pollstar.com
- The scavenger hunt

The only exception is Massive Attack, which was mentioned in the Statesman, I am not sure where they got their info (if anybody has more evidence, please share).

So, I would not call the bands listed on the left side of the page rumors. Everybody else is speculation. Some make more sense than others (Dave Matthews Band seems very likely based on posted dates (or lack of posted dates/markets); in contrast, Green Day, Prince, Sufjan, Wilco, etc... are mostly based on hearsay and wishful thinking).

As for Dave Matthews Bands, very similar logic was used for Oasis and Coldplay last year, and those of us who called those bands happened to be dead on. Sure, the Stateman gave clues for them also, but the schedule was the dead giveaway for me.

As for the other confirms you mentioned.
Stevie Wonder was a clue given in the Austin Chronicle. Turned out to be a false rumor.

The Smashing Pumpkins Lollapalooza was just a rumor.

Flaming Lips, Wilco, Aracade Fire appearing at Bonnaroo? I am pretty sure the sources were not official websites, officical band web pages, pollstar or Bonnaroo themselves.

Also, bands can and do cancel. Maybe Stevie Wonder was confirmed last year and he backed out prior to the official announcement?

Thanks for the solid post Malone - the process of watching the speculation unfold and the buzz growing is a great lead up.

I'll speculate that Wilco is playing because they always play. Although the appearance of Son Volt on this years schedule may change that.

I hope they play, they are always a highlight of the festival.

Much as I would love to see Prince, I don't see it happening. Has he ever played a festival.

Wilco & Son Volt both played last year's Wakarusa festival...
